Munchausen by Proxy & PANDAS: Fabricating Illness in Children
A person with Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSbP) may simulate symptoms of illness or injury in a child in order to gain attention, sympathy, or financial support. This can include simulating symptoms of PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections). PANDAS is a rare condition that is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, including infections such as strep throat. Symptoms of PANDAS can include sudden onset of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), tics, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
A person with MSbP may simulate symptoms of PANDAS in a child by:
* Exaggerating or making up symptoms of OCD, tics, or ADHD
* Causing or exacerbating symptoms by giving the child medication or substances that can cause these symptoms
* Preventing the child from getting proper medical care
If you suspect that a child may be the victim of MSbP, it is important to seek help from a qualified medical professional.
