Doxycycline Hyclate and Pregnancy: Risks & Safety
Doxycycline hyclate is a tetracycline antibiotic that belongs to the *Tetracyclines* class.
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding is not recommended because tetracycline antibiotics can cause permanent discoloration of the developing teeth (yellow-gray-brown in children under 8) and inhibition of bone growth in the developing fetus. Tetracyclines may also cause:
- hepatotoxicity
- fatty liver
- pancreatitis
- phototoxicity (sun sensitivity)
- pseudotumor cerebri (harmless bulging fontanel in infants)
Do not use tetracyclines during pregnancy or in children younger than 8 years of age.
