Negative Pregnancy Test at 5 Weeks? Understanding Early Pregnancy & hCG
It is possible to have a negative pregnancy test at 5 weeks of pregnancy, especially if the test is taken very early in the week. Pregnancy tests work by detecting the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in the urine or blood. HCG is a hormone that is produced by the placenta after implantation of a fertilized egg. However, it can take several days or even weeks for hCG levels to rise to detectable levels in the urine or blood. Therefore, a negative pregnancy test at 5 weeks does not necessarily mean that a woman is not pregnant. Some women may not get a positive pregnancy test until they are 6 or even 7 weeks pregnant.
If a woman is experiencing symptoms of pregnancy, such as missed period, nausea, or breast tenderness, she should speak to her doctor or midwife, even if she has a negative pregnancy test. A blood test can be done to check hCG levels and confirm pregnancy.
