Postpartum Showering: Benefits & Best Practices After Childbirth
It is common for people who have given birth to shower after labor and delivery.
After giving birth, there are a few things doctors and nurses may do to help you get cleaned up. They may:
- wipe your body with a warm cloth
- help you to the shower or bathtub
- provide or you with soap, shampoo, and a towel
When you're in the shower or tub, take your time and relax. Don't scrub yourself too hard or use hot water because it can irritate your skin. Focus on cleaning your body thoroughly and paying special attention to areas that are dirty or sweaty. Avoid using harsh soaps, body washes, or feminine products in your vagina. These can also irritate your skin and cause discomfort.
After you've finished showering, dry yourself off with a clean towel and put on a fresh pair of clothes. You may also want to apply a mild moisturizer to your skin. If you have any questions about how to care for yourself after giving birth, be sure to ask your doctor or nurse.
