Tubal Pregnancy (Ectopic Pregnancy): Symptoms, Signs & Risks
Pregnancy in the tubes, also known as a tubal pregnancy or ectopic pregnancy, occurs when a fertilized egg implants and begins to grow in one of the fallopian tubes instead of the uterus. This is a serious condition that can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.
Signs and symptoms of a tubal pregnancy can include:
* Pelvic pain, which may be sharp, stabbing, or aching
* Vaginal bleeding or spotting, which can be light or heavy
* Nausea and vomiting
* Dizziness or fainting
* Lower back pain
* Shoulder pain
* Rectal pressure or pain
It's important to note that not all women with a tubal pregnancy will experience all of these symptoms. Some women may only have mild symptoms or no symptoms at all.
If you think you may be pregnant and are experiencing any of the above symptoms, it's important to see a doctor or go to the emergency room right away. A tubal pregnancy can be diagnosed with a blood test and an ultrasound. Treatment typically involves surgery to remove the fallopian tube and the developing pregnancy.
Risk factors for a tubal pregnancy include:
* A history of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
* A history of sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
* Smoking
* Using an intrauterine device (IUD)
* Being over the age of 35
* Having had multiple miscarriages
If you're pregnant and have any of these risk factors, it's important to see your doctor regularly to monitor your pregnancy for any signs of a tubal pregnancy.
