Pregnancy After Unprotected Sex: Understanding Timing & Testing
If you had unprotected sex, it is possible that you could be pregnant. However, it is too early to take a pregnancy test at this time. Pregnancy tests work by detecting a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which is produced after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. It typically takes 6-14 days for hCG levels to become high enough to be detected by a pregnancy test. Therefore, you should wait until at least 7 days after your missed period (or 28 days since your last unprotected sex) to take a pregnancy test. If you take a test too early, it may not be sensitive enough to detect hCG and you could get a false negative result.
If you are still concerned or do not have your period after 28 days have passed since your last period, you should consider taking a pregnancy test or consulting with a doctor.
