Can a woman be pregnant and have negative hcg test?
It is possible to have a negative pregnancy test despite being pregnant. This can happen for a variety of reasons, including:
* Early pregnancy: The human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) hormone is produced by the placenta during pregnancy. However, it takes time for hCG levels to rise in the body. If a woman is tested for pregnancy very early in her pregnancy, before hCG levels have had a chance to increase, she may receive a negative test result even though she is actually pregnant.
* Ectopic pregnancy: An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside of the uterus, usually in the fallopian tubes. Ectopic pregnancies can produce hCG, but the levels are often lower than in a normal pregnancy. This can lead to a negative pregnancy test result, even though the woman is actually pregnant.
* Gestational trophoblastic disease: Gestational trophoblastic disease is a group of rare conditions that involve the abnormal growth of placental tissue. These conditions can produce high levels of hCG, but they can also lead to negative pregnancy test results.
* Chemical pregnancy: A chemical pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants in the uterus, but the pregnancy does not develop further. Chemical pregnancies can produce low levels of hCG, which may not be detectable on a pregnancy test.
If a woman has a negative pregnancy test but suspects that she may be pregnant, she should see her doctor. The doctor can perform additional tests, such as a blood test for hCG or an ultrasound, to confirm or rule out pregnancy.
