Is the placenta thrown away after birth?
The placenta is typically discarded as medical waste after birth. In some cultures, however, the placenta is buried or planted for sentimental or symbolic reasons. The placenta provides oxygen and nutrients to the developing fetus through the umbilical cord. It also produces hormones that support pregnancy. After the baby is born, the placenta detaches from the uterine wall and is expelled from the body.Pregnancy & Health - Related Articles
