Umbilical Vein After Birth: Transformation and Function
After birth the umbilical vein loses its original function of carrying oxygenated blood from the mother to the baby and instead becomes known as the ligamentum teres. The ductus venosus also transforms into the ligamentum venosum.
As ligaments, they provide support and stability to the liver and serve no direct circulatory role.
