Egg Donation in Canada: Requirements & Process

Canada, currently, has no legislation that deals with egg donation, making it both legal, and a generally accepted practice. There are a number of fertility clinics that allow women to become egg donors in Canada.

Requirements

• According to the Government of Canada Depository Services Program, most volunteer egg donors are required to go through a screening process prior to donating. Potential donors must undergo a physical examination, blood tests and cervical cultures, a medical history and a psychosocial evaluation.

Preparation

• Becoming an egg donor in Canada requires the woman to have multiple eggs stimulated into growth via hormone therapy. Once the eggs have reached the desired state, they are removed from the donor, vaginally, via a needle. The donor is sedated during this delicate process.

  Once harvested, a donor's eggs are immediately fertilized outside of the body, and the resulting embryos are implanted in a recipient or stored cryogenically for a longer period of time. In Canada, an egg donor can remain anonymous or provide her name to potential recipients.
