Becoming a Family Physician: Licensing & Certification Requirements
Licensing- Passing the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Steps 1, 2, and 3.
- Graduating from an accredited medical school.
- Completing an accredited family medicine residency program.
- Obtaining a medical license from the state in which you want to practice.
Certification
- Obtaining board certification from the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). This involves passing the ABFM certification examination.
- Maintaining board certification by completing continuing medical education (CME) requirements.
Some states may also have additional licensing or certification requirements for family physicians.
