What Is a Good Vitamin to Take to Maintain Healthy Cholesterol Levels?

Maintaining a healthy cholesterol level is crucial, as high cholesterol levels can lead to inflammation, blood clotting, heart attack and stroke. In addition to medications prescribed by your doctor, diet, exercise, and Vitamin E are beneficial.
  1. Antioxidant Qualities

    • Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that has antioxidant qualities. It helps in the defense of LDL corrosion within the arterial wall. Dangerous forms of LDL are low in Vitamin E.

    Combinations

    • Vitamin E works most efficiently when combined with Vitamin C. Vitamin C helps prevent the breakdown of Vitamin E. Selenium also works well with Vitamin E in defending the cell lining of your arteries.

    Fish Oil

    • Although fish oil is an excellent cholesterol reducer, it is also high in polyunsaturated fatty acids. Consuming large amounts of fish oil can introduce high levels of polyunsaturated acids, which increase oxidation, depleting Vitamin E levels.

    Supplements

    • According to Dr. Janet Bond Brill, recent studies indicate that taking a Vitamin E supplement does not provide the same protection as eating foods rich in Vitamin E. There is also evidence that taking 600 IUs of vitamin E daily is beneficial.

    Foods

    • Almonds, walnuts, brazil nuts, cashews, barley, and flaxseed oil are excellent sources of Vitamin E.
