Expired Mouthwash: Is It Still Effective? | Oral Health Insights
Mouthwash does not expire in the traditional sense, as it does not contain any perishable ingredients. However, the active ingredients in mouthwash can lose their potency over time, making it less effective at killing bacteria and preventing cavities. Additionally, the flavor and color of mouthwash can change over time, which may make it unpleasant to use.
For these reasons, it is generally recommended to replace mouthwash after 2-3 years. However, if you are using a mouthwash that contains alcohol, it may be safe to use for up to 5 years.
If you are unsure whether your mouthwash is still good, you can test it by pouring a small amount into a glass of water. If the mouthwash turns cloudy or discolors, it is time to replace it. You should also replace your mouthwash if it has changed its odor or taste.
