First Dental Visit for Children: What to Expect & Prepare
Dentists recommend that a child has his first dental appointment when he turns 1 year old. Dental problems begin earlier than parent's might believe, and the American Dental Association considers this a good age for dentists to check a child's dental development.-
Considerations
-
It is important to tell your child what to expect before the first visit. Many children have a hard time sitting still or feel scared in medical situations. You can also request that your child's first visit is just to introduce her to the dentist so that she is more comfortable for the first exam.
Time Frame
-
Try to schedule the first dental exam as early in the day as possible. Also plan on staying in the dental exam room with your child if he is under the age of 2. If your child is comfortable, it is a good idea to wait in the reception area. This will help your child slowly build a relationship with the dentist.
Specifics
-
The first dental exam will take between 15 to 30 minutes. The dentist will examine the gums, jaw area and any bite problems. X-rays may be done, plus a gentle cleaning with a dental polisher to remove plaque.
Benefits
-
The dentist will sense whether or not your child is comfortable. Developing trust between a dentist and a child is sometimes a slow process but can be smoother if you take your child to a pediatric dentist. These offices are usually more colorful, child friendly and oftentimes have cartoons or fun music playing in the exam room.
