Strep Throat vs. Tonsillitis: Understanding the Differences
Strep throat and tonsillitis are both infections of the throat, but they are not the same thing.
Strep throat is a bacterial infection caused by the Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria. It can cause a sore throat, fever, headache, and body aches.
Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils, which are two small glands at the back of the throat. It can be caused by a bacterial or viral infection. Symptoms of tonsillitis include a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, swollen tonsils, and fever.
In some cases, strep throat can lead to tonsillitis. However, not all cases of tonsillitis are caused by strep throat.
