Gum Abscess: Causes, Symptoms & What to Do
A puss-filled blister on the gum that drains when pressed and then refills could be a sign of a dental abscess. Dental abscesses are infections that occur in the pulp, the innermost part of the tooth, or in the tissues surrounding the root of a tooth. They are typically caused by bacteria that enter the pulp or the tissues surrounding the root through a cavity, a crack in the tooth, or gum disease.
Symptoms of a dental abscess can include:
- Severe, persistent toothache
- Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
- Swelling of the gums
- A puss-filled blister on the gums
- Bad breath
- Fever
- Difficulty swallowing
If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to see a dentist as soon as possible. Dental abscesses can be serious and can lead to further complications if left untreated.
Treatment for a dental abscess will depend on the severity of the infection. Treatment options may include:
- Antibiotics to clear the infection
- Drainage of the abscess
- Root canal treatment
- Extraction of the affected tooth
With proper treatment, most dental abscesses can be successfully treated.
