Lost Dental Filling? What to Do & Protect Your Tooth
Contact the dentist immediately.
The dentist will want to determine the reason the filling fell out and will recommend taking the necessary steps to correct the situation, as soon as possible.
In the meantime, there are a few things you can do to protect the exposed tooth:
- Do not eat or drink anything hot, cold, or sweet. These types of foods can irritate the exposed nerve.
- Avoid chewing on the affected side of the mouth. This can help prevent further damage to the tooth.
- Rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times a day. This can help to cleanse the area and reduce inflammation.
Depending on the severity of the situation and the underlying reason for the filling coming out, the dentist may need to temporarily cover the tooth with a sealant, perform a root canal and crown the tooth, replace or redo the filling, or other necessary treatments to correct the situation.
Your dentist will let you know the correct steps needed, based on your individual situation.
