What are platelet counts used for?
Platelet counts are used to:
- Diagnose and monitor disorders that affect platelets, such as thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) and thrombocytosis (high platelet count)
- Monitor the effectiveness of medications that affect platelets, such as anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents
- Screen for bleeding disorders, such as von Willebrand disease and hemophilia
- Diagnose and monitor conditions that can affect platelet production or function, such as anemia, leukemia, and liver disease
- Help determine the cause of abnormal bleeding or bruising
- Provide information about a person's overall health and well-being
