Novocaine and Sinus Irritation: Symptoms & What to Do
In rare cases, a novacaine shot can irritate the sinus cavity. This is because the novacaine can spread into the sinus cavity and cause inflammation and swelling. Symptoms of sinus irritation from novacaine can include:
* Nasal congestion
* Runny nose
* Sneezing
* Facial pain or pressure
* Headache
* Ear pain
* Sore throat
* Difficulty breathing
If you experience any of these symptoms after receiving a novacaine shot, it is important to see your doctor right away. Treatment may include antibiotics, antihistamines, or decongestants. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to drain the sinus cavity.
To help prevent sinus irritation from novacaine, your doctor may recommend:
* Taking a decongestant before the injection
* Avoiding nose blowing for 24 hours after the injection
* Using a humidifier or saline nasal spray to keep the nasal passages moist
