Baby & Permanent Teeth: Development at Birth & Beyond
Primary dentition
* 20 deciduous teeth (also known as "baby teeth") are present at birth, but they are not yet erupted.
* These teeth are located in the jaws, but they are covered by gum tissue.
* The first deciduous tooth usually erupts between 6 and 8 months of age.
Permanent dentition
* 32 permanent teeth begin to develop around 6 months of age.
* These teeth are located behind the deciduous teeth.
* The first permanent tooth usually erupts around 6 years of age.
* The last permanent tooth usually erupts around 12-14 years of age.
Wisdom teeth
* 4 wisdom teeth (also known as "third molars") are the last permanent teeth to erupt.
* These teeth are located at the back of the mouth, behind the second molars.
* Wisdom teeth usually erupt between 17 and 25 years of age, but they can sometimes erupt later in life.
