Pelvic inflammatory disease can occur due to any sexually transmitted infections including chlamydia and gonorrhea that are spread during unprotected sex. A vaginal yeast infection (candidiasis) is caused by an overgrowth of a type of fungus or yeast that normally lives in the vagina and does not cause PID.
