Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Levoxyl, etc.): Side Effects & Safety
Prescribed in order to replace a specific hormone needed to treat hypothyroidism and/or goiter, levothyoxine is also known by a few brand names, such as Levothroid, Levoxyl, Synthroid and Unithroid.-
Side Effects

Levothyroxine use is known to cause side effects, including: headache, nervousness, irritability, fever, sweating, hot flashes, changes in appetite and/or body weight, sleep issues and changes in menstruation.
Allergic Reaction

Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction to levothyroxine which require immediate medical help include: hives, breathing problems and swelling of the face, lips, tongue and/or throat.
Drug Interactions

Certain drugs, such as some antidepressants, may cause dangerous interactions when combined with levothyroxine. Consult both a physician and pharmacist about all drugs you take before starting levothyroxine.
Overdose

In order to avoid serious complications, follow your dosing instructions carefully when taking levothyroxine. Signs of overdose include: chest pain, confusion, leg cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, breathing problems, pounding heart beat and tremors.
Considerations

Levothyroxine is not safe for all individuals, including those suffering from: diabetes, heart disease, anemia, history of blood clotting and problems with the pituitary and/or adrenal gland.
