Thyroid Problems: Understanding Health Issues Caused by Thyroid Dysfunction

The thyroid gland is located in the neck and produces chemicals called T-hormones that control metabolism. In some cases, the thyroid gland may not produce enough hormone; in others, it will produce too many. These thyroid conditions can cause several health problems.

Hypothyroidism

• Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid ceases to function or produces too little hormone. This disease may affect people of any age; however, women age 50 and older are most susceptible to the condition.

Effects: Under-Active Thyroid

• The first symptom of an under-active thyroid is fatigue. Unlike regular fatigue, this tiredness will persist regardless of how much sleep a person gets.

Time Frame: Hypothyroidism

• If left untreated, persons suffering from hypothyroidism will experience severe uncontrolled weight gain, joint pain, swelling, increased cholesterol and difficulty having bowel movements.

Hyperthyroidism

• Hyperthyroidism is the opposite of under-active thyroid. Persons suffering from hyperthyroidism have thyroid glands that produce higher than normal levels of T-hormone.

Effects: Over-Active Thyroid

• A person with an over-active thyroid will experience sudden unexplained weight loss, increased appetite, sweating (particularly at night), and (rapid) irregular heartbeat.

Prevention/Solution

• Health issues relating to the thyroid gland require treatment by a physician. Persons experiencing symptoms of over-active or under-active thyroid should make an appointment with a doctor to have their thyroid gland function tested.
