Can I use polysporin on shingles?

Polysporin is an antibiotic ointment used to prevent bacterial infection in superficial wounds. Shingles is a skin rash caused by the varicella-zoster virus. Antibiotics do not treat viral infections. Using Polysporin on shingles will not be effective.
