Wrist Sprain Recovery: The RICE Method and More
RICE is the acronym for the four steps to manage a sprained wrist:
* Rest: Immobilize the wrist within 24 hours. This will help to reduce swelling and pain. Depending on the severity of the injury, this could mean wearing a cast, splint or brace, or using your other hand less for everyday tasks.
* Ice: Use ice packs or a bag of frozen peas to help with swelling and pain.
* Compression: Apply a compression bandage to help keep swelling and pain down. Avoid wrapping the bandage too tightly, or it could cut off circulation.
* Elevate: Keep your wrist above the level of your heart to help with swelling and pain.
Additional tips:
* Take over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen to help with pain and swelling.
* Follow the advice of your doctor or physiotherapist for rehabilitation exercises to help strengthen your wrist and regain mobility.
* If your wrist pain is severe, you may need to see a doctor for further treatment.
