Dislocations vs. Sprains & Strains: Key Differences & Symptoms

Dislocations, sprains, and strains are all injuries to the musculoskeletal system, but they involve different types of damage.

Dislocations

* Complete loss of contact between two bones that normally articulate

* Usually caused by significant force, such as a fall or a car accident

* Can also be caused by a congenital deformity or a muscle imbalance

* Symptoms include pain, swelling, deformity, and limited range of motion

* Treatment typically involves closed reduction (manually moving the bones back into place) and immobilization in a cast or brace

Sprains

* Overstretching or tearing of a ligament (the tissue that connects two bones)

* Usually caused by a sudden twist or turn

* Can also be caused by a chronic condition, such as arthritis

* Symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, and limited range of motion

* Treatment typically involves rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE)

Strains

* Overstretching or tearing of a muscle or tendon (the tissue that connects muscle to bone)

* Usually caused by overuse, but can also be caused by a sudden injury

* Can also be caused by a chronic condition, such as arthritis

* Symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, and limited range of motion

* Treatment typically involves RICE

In general, dislocations are more serious injuries than sprains or strains, and they require more extensive treatment. It is important to see a doctor if you think you have dislocated a bone, sprained a ligament, or strained a muscle.
