Cushing's Syndrome: Understanding Facial Changes & Symptoms
Cushing's Syndrome
Cushing's syndrome is a hormonal disorder that occurs when the body produces too much of the hormone cortisol. This can lead to a number of symptoms, including:
* A round or moon-shaped face
* A fatty hump between the shoulders
* Easy bruising
* Thinning skin
* Stretch marks
* Acne
* Increased hair growth
* Irregular menstrual periods
* Infertility
* Weight gain
* High blood pressure
* Diabetes
* Heart disease
* Osteoporosis
* Depression
* Anxiety
Cushing's syndrome can be caused by a number of factors, including:
* Pituitary tumors
* Adrenal gland tumors
* Ectopic ACTH syndrome (a rare condition in which ACTH is produced by a tumor outside of the pituitary gland)
* Certain medications, such as corticosteroids
Treatment for Cushing's syndrome typically involves surgery to remove the tumor or tumors that are causing the condition. In some cases, medication may be used to control the symptoms of Cushing's syndrome.
