Understanding the Layers of Skin: Epidermis, Dermis & Hypodermis
The skin, the body's largest organ, serves many functions, including protection, temperature regulation, and sensation. It also contains numerous structures such as:
- Epidermis: This is the outermost layer of the skin, composed primarily of keratinized cells (keratinocytes) that protect the body from external factors.
- Dermis: Located beneath the epidermis, the dermis is a thicker layer of connective tissue containing blood vessels, hair follicles, sweat glands, and nerve endings.
- Hypodermis: Also called the subcutaneous layer, the hypodermis is the deepest layer of the skin, consisting mainly of fat cells that provide insulation and padding.
