How to Take Melatonin for Parkinson's Disease
Parkinson's disease is a degenerative brain disease that attacks the central nervous system. Because it primarily affects the parts of the brain that control movement, Parkinson's is officially classified as a movement disorder. It causes muscle tremors and abnormally slow movement, and the disease gradually progresses. There is also evidence that Parkinson's can affect the body's Circadian rhythm and that supplements, such as melatonin, that affect the Circadian rhythm can be useful for Parkinson's patients.
Instructions
Only take the recommended dose. When taking an herbal supplement such as melatonin, it is important to remember that "more" does not mean that it will be more effective. In the case of melatonin, a 5 mg dose is the recommended amount per day.
Take melatonin 30 minutes before going to bed. Because melatonin can cause drowsiness, it is best to take it right before bed. In addition, taking melatonin at the same time each day will increase its effectiveness.
Be careful about mixing medications. Supplements like melatonin can interact with prescription medications and other supplements, leading to undesirable side effects. Don't stop taking your prescription Parkinson's medications, but be careful about taking other herbal supplements, especially for insomnia.
Tell your doctor that you are taking melatonin. This will help him keep an eye out for side effects.
Follow a normal schedule of going to bed and getting up. Because melatonin affects the Circadian rhythm (which affects sleep cycles), keeping a regular schedule will maximize its effectiveness.
