Responding to a Blood Clot During Massage: A Guide for Therapists
If a clot occurs while giving a massage, it is important to
1. Stop the massage immediately.
Do not attempt to continue the massage, as this could further dislodge the clot and cause more serious problems.
2. Elevate the affected limb.
This will help to reduce swelling and pain, elevate at a level that is comfortable to them
3. Apply a cold compress to the affected area.
This will also help to reduce swelling and pain.
4. Encourage the client to seek medical attention immediately.
They should be seen by a doctor as soon as possible to rule out any serious problems.
Additional tips:
-If the client is experiencing any other symptoms, such as shortness of breath, chest pain, or dizziness, call 911 immediately.
-Do not attempt to move the client if they are experiencing any pain.
-Reassure the client and help them to remain calm.
-Document the incident in your massage notes.
-Make sure you have taken the appropriative steps to get appropriate medical help.
