What Is Skelaxin Prescribed For?
Skelaxin (metaxalone) is a prescription medication that acts as a central nervous system depressant for the purpose of treating discomfort and pain associated with strains, sprains and other musculoskeletal conditions.-
Dosing

Skelaxin is available in 800 mg tablets. The recommended dose is one tablet, three to four times per day.
Interactions

Skelaxin should not be taken with other CNS depressants (i.e. benzodiazepines, opioids, alcohol) since they will significantly intensify the depressant effects and may lead to serious side effects.
Contraindications

Caution is advised when prescribing Skelaxin to individuals with poor kidney or liver functioning, since it may cause hepatic or renal failure. Metaxalone is not recommended for children 12 or younger.
Side Effects

Potential side effects of Skelaxin include drowsiness, dizziness, headache, irritability, anxiety, nausea and other gastrointestinal disturbances, skin rash and jaundice.
Overdose

If overdose occurs, seek medical attention immediately. Typical treatment for overdose includes gastric lavage (stomach pumping) and supportive therapy.
