What is the fuction of Psoas Major Muscle?
Function:
1. Flexion of hip joint:
- Primary flexor of hip joint
- Powerful at lower angles of hip flexion, less effective near full hip flexion
- Action: It flexes the thigh at the hip joint.
2. Weak lateral rotator of the hip joint:
- Lateral rotation is produced when hip is slightly flexed
- Action: It causes the thigh to rotate laterally at the hip joint.
Innervation:
* Ventral rami (anterior divisions) of L1–L3 spinal nerves
Actions:
- Flexion of the hip
- Weak lateral rotation of the hip
Attachments:
- Origin: Lumbar vertebrae (bodies, transverse processes, and intervertebral discs of T12 – L5)
- Insertion: Lesser trochanter of femur
Clinical relevance:
- Can cause or contribute to low back pain
