Understanding the Muscular System: Components and Types
The muscular system consists of muscles, tendons, and ligaments and includes skeletal muscles, smooth muscles, and cardiac muscles.
Skeletal muscles are voluntary muscles attached to bones and are responsible for movement. They are controlled by the somatic nervous system.
Smooth muscles are involuntary muscles found in the walls of internal organs, such as the stomach, intestines, and blood vessels. They are controlled by the autonomic nervous system.
Cardiac muscles are involuntary muscles found in the heart. They are responsible for the pumping action of the heart and are controlled by the cardiac conduction system.
Tendons are connective tissues that attach muscles to bones.
Ligaments are connective tissues that connect bones to other bones.
