What can be flitered in the glomerulus?
In the glomerulus, the following substances can be filtered from the blood:
1. Water: Water constitutes the majority of the filtrate and is freely filtered through the glomerular capillaries.
2. Small molecules: Small molecules such as glucose, amino acids, vitamins, and electrolytes (e.g., sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate) are also filtered through the glomerulus.
3. Nitrogenous wastes: Nitrogenous waste products such as urea and creatinine are filtered out of the blood by the glomerulus.
4. Toxins and drugs: Various toxins, drugs, and their metabolites can be filtered from the blood by the glomerulus.
5. Proteins: Small proteins such as albumin can also be filtered through the glomerulus, but they are usually reabsorbed in the proximal tubule.
The filtration process in the glomerulus is essential for the formation of urine and the removal of waste products from the body.
