Scrotal Swelling After Abdominal Paracentesis: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment
Scrotal edema after paracentesis abdominis is a rare but possible complication. It occurs when fluid from the abdomen leaks into the scrotum through the inguinal canal. This can happen if the paracentesis needle punctures the inguinal canal or if the patient has a preexisting weakness in the inguinal canal.
Symptoms of scrotal edema include swelling of the scrotum, pain, and discomfort. In some cases, the edema can extend to the penis and thighs. Treatment for scrotal edema typically involves rest, elevation of the scrotum, and pain relievers. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to repair the inguinal canal and prevent further leakage of fluid.
To prevent scrotal edema after paracentesis abdominis, the doctor will carefully insert the paracentesis needle and avoid puncturing the inguinal canal. The patient will also be monitored for signs of scrotal edema after the procedure.
