Understanding erections in boys: Development and normalcy
Erections, also called hard-ons, boners, or stiffy's, are a normal part of development and sexual arousal in every male human being. There is no single age at which all males start having erections. Generally, boys have erections from the time they are born. However, these instances may not always be noticeable or be associated with sexual arousal.
Erections happen when the penis fills up with blood and gets firm. This process is controlled by the nervous system and the body's hormones, like testosterone.
During puberty (from around 12 to 16 years of age), the male body produces more hormones such as testosterone, which leads to an increased frequency of erections and other changes related to sexual development and maturation.
