Vaccines vs. Disease: Understanding Immune Response
Getting a vaccine is not like having the disease. Vaccines work by introducing a weakened or inactivated form of a pathogen into the body, which triggers the immune system to produce antibodies against that pathogen. This means that if the person is later exposed to the real pathogen, their immune system will be able to quickly recognize and destroy it, preventing them from getting sick.
In contrast, when someone has a disease, they are actually infected with the pathogen and their body is actively fighting the infection. This can cause a variety of symptoms, depending on the disease.
