What Could Elevate the TSH Levels?

TSH, or thyroid-stimulating hormone, is produced by the pituitary gland and helps regulate the functions of the thyroid gland. High levels of TSH are linked to several known causes.

The Facts

• The pituitary gland is a pea-sized structure near the base of the brain that controls the functions of other hormone-producing glands. The thyroid gland sits below the larynx at the front of the neck and produces hormones that regulate cell metabolism.

Increased Production of TSH

• When the thyroid gland produces inadequate amounts of its hormones, the pituitary gland increases production of TSH in an attempt to encourage higher levels of thyroid output.

Causes of Elevated TSH

• According to the peer-reviewed service Lab Tests Online, elevated TSH levels have three main causes: dysfunctions of the thyroid gland, dysfunctions of the pituitary gland, and insufficient medication in individuals with a thyroid disorder, or who have had their thyroid gland removed.

TSH Testing

• TSH testing is done through a blood sample, and is also used to diagnose low levels of TSH production.

Considerations

• By itself, TSH testing cannot determine the reason for elevated TSH levels. Additional tests are needed to measure the output of the thyroid hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), as well as thyroid antibodies.
