HIV Transmission Risk: Drinking from Shared Drinks & Open Wounds

The risk of contracting HIV from a cut into a drink is exceptionally low. HIV is a fragile virus that is quickly destroyed outside the body. Therefore, it is not likely to survive in the environment long enough to transmit the infection. Additionally, the amount of virus present in saliva or other bodily fluids is typically very low, meaning even if the virus were to come into contact with an open wound, the chances of infection would be minimal.
