NEUT Test: Understanding Neutrophil Counts and Their Significance
The NEUT test measures the number of neutrophils in a blood sample. Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell that helps the body fight infection. A high neutrophil count can indicate that the body is fighting an infection, while a low neutrophil count can indicate a variety of conditions, such as a bone marrow disorder or an autoimmune disease.
The NEUT test is typically performed as part of a complete blood count (CBC), which measures the levels of different types of blood cells in a blood sample. The NEUT test can also be performed as a stand-alone test if a doctor suspects that a person may have a neutrophil disorder.
The normal range for neutrophils is 2,500 to 7,000 cells per microliter (μL) of blood. A high neutrophil count is defined as a neutrophil count greater than 7,000 μL, while a low neutrophil count is defined as a neutrophil count less than 2,500 μL.
A high neutrophil count can be caused by a variety of conditions, including:
