Dietary Strategies to Manage Uric Acid Levels
Hyperuricemia means high uric acid levels in the bloodstream. This condition is common in people suffering from gout, kidney failure or kidney stones. High uric acid levels may be evident before getting diseases such as heart disease, kidney disease or high blood pressure according to the mayo.clinic.com website (see Reference 1). Avoiding certain foods will lower uric acid in the bloodstream. A substance found in some foods produces purine, which leads to high uric acid production.
Instructions
Avoid foods high in purine such as organ or game meats, dried beans or peas, tuna, herring, sardines, sunflower or poppy seeds, and anchovies.
Avoid drinking caffeinated beverages such as tea, coffee or carbonated drinks. These can elevate uric acid levels.
Limit your alcohol consumption. Drink moderately, as indulging often in alcoholic beverages can raise uric acid levels.
Maintain a healthy weight; obesity can cause concentrations of uric acid in the bloodstream.
Avoid eating foods rich in niacin or vitamin B3, as these can elevate uric acid. Some foods with high levels of niacin are chicken or turkey breast, lamb loin, salmon, halibut, crimini mushrooms, soy sauce, asparagus and beef tenderloin (see Reference 2).
