Understanding the Long-Term Effects of Toenail Fungus
Types of fungus, called dermatophytes, normally cause toenail fungus. Some symptoms of toenail fungus include yellow and brittle nails, distorted toenail shape and a dullness in the shine of the toenail. Toenail fungus can lead to a plethora of complications when left untreated.-
Infections
-
Toenail fungus may lead to infections in other parts of the body if you have a weakened or suppressed immune system.
Separation
-
Toenails also may separate from the nail bed if they are left untreated long enough.
Permanent Damage
-
Toenails may be permanently damaged.
Diabetic Concerns
-
If you are diabetic, a toenail infection may lead to a more severe complication as the nerves and blood supply to the feet are already strained by diabetes.
Prevention/Solution
-
In order to avoid a toenail infection, make sure your toenails are kept short and clean. Also, avoid walking barefoot in public areas as fungus from other people may also infect your toes.
