Stop a Nosebleed Fast: Effective First Aid & Prevention
Nosebleed ( Epistaxis)
Simple method
- Sit upright and lean forward slightly to avoid swallowing blood.
- Pinch *soft* part of nostrils (not bridge of nose) together firmly with your thumb and index finger for at least 10 minutes.
- Breathe through mouth
- Use a nasal decongestant spray in non-bleeding nostril after holding the pinched nostril for at least 10 minutes.
- Avoid straining or bending over.
- Keep head elevated 45 degrees, and avoid forceful nose blowing for 12-24 hours.
If simple method does not work:
- Use over the counter nasal spray or gel
If nosebleed continues for 30 minutes:
- Seek medical treatment
Important things to remember:
Do NOT tilt head back - this won't stop bleeding and may cause blood to be swallowed leading to nausea or vomiting.
