Heimlich Maneuver: Step-by-Step Guide to Help Someone Choking
The best way to help someone who is choking is to perform the Heimlich maneuver. Here are the steps to follow:
1. Stand behind the person and wrap your arms around their waist.
2. Make a fist with one hand and place the thumb side of your fist against the person's upper abdomen, just below their rib cage.
3. Grasp your fist with your other hand and pull it inward and upward, using quick, forceful thrusts.
4. Continue performing the Heimlich maneuver until the object is dislodged or the person begins to breathe again.
5. If the person loses consciousness, call 911 and continue performing the Heimlich maneuver until help arrives.
Note: If the person is pregnant or has a large belly, you should use the abdominal thrust instead of the Heimlich maneuver. To perform the abdominal thrust, stand behind the person and place your hands on their abdomen, just below their rib cage. Press inward and upward with quick, forceful thrusts until the object is dislodged or the person begins to breathe again.
