Minor Burn Care: Home Treatment & When to Seek Medical Help
Minor burns are ones that can be taken care of at home. If you feel for any reason that you have any type of burn that is not minor, seek professional help immediately. The following steps can be used to treat a minor burn.Things You'll Need
- Cool Water
- Gauze
- Over the Counter Pain Reliever
Instructions
First cool the burn. Run the burned are under cool water for almost 10 minutes or until the pain has gone away. If you are not able to put the burned area under cool water, run a tub full of water and immerse the area in the cool water. This will help with the swelling. DO NOT PUT ICE ON THE BURN!!!!
After you have cooled the burn, place a gauze over the burn. Wrap it over the burn loosely; you do not want to apply an pressure to that area. You want to keep the air off the skin; it will help elevate some of the pain. Do not use any type of fluffy cotton balls, this will aggravate the skin.
If you still have any type of pain take an over-the-counter medicine pain reliever. I would suggest aspirin (if it is not a child that has burned), ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, naproxen, or Tylenol. Follow the directions of each medicine.
