Silver Sulfadiazine for Second-Degree Burns: Risks & Alternatives
Do not apply silver sulfadiazine cream to a second degree burn
Silver sulfadiazine is a topical antibiotic that is used to prevent infection in first- and second-degree burns, skin grafts, and other wounds. However, it is not recommended for use on second-degree burns because it can delay wound healing and cause skin irritation.
Second-degree burns are characterized by the formation of blisters and require more than 21 days to heal.
Instead, you should use a non-stick bandage or a hydrogel to cover the burn. You can also take over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, to help relieve pain and inflammation. If the burn is severe, you may need to seek medical attention.
