Responding to a Clothing Fire: Immediate Actions to Take
Here's how to respond if someone's clothes are on fire:
1. Stop, Drop, and Roll:
Instruct the person to stop immediately, drop to the ground, and roll back and forth vigorously until the flames are extinguished. Rolling smothers the fire by cutting off oxygen and helps extinguish any lingering flairs.
2. Don't Run:
Running or fanning the flames will only worsen the situation by providing more oxygen to the fire.
3. Cover and Smother:
If a piece of fabric or something suitable is close at hand, smother the flames by throwing it over the person so that all open flames are completely covered. Blankets, heavy cloth, rugs, jackets, or anything large enough to cover the fire can be used. Press down, if necessary, to ensure contact with the body so as to suffocate the flames,
4. Use Fire Extinguisher:
If appropriate, a fire extinguisher can be used to control the blaze. Aim from a safe distance at the base of the flames while taking care not to spray toward the person's face, as the chemical powder might cause breathing difficulties.
5. Call for Help:
Immediately contact emergency services (like 911) or appropriate emergency help as soon as possible to ensure timely medical support. Even if the fire seems relatively minor, professional assessment is advised due to potential thermal injuries.
Remember:
Stay as calm as possible during the situation to maintain rational decision-making.
