Lithotripsy and Stents: When Are They Needed?
Ureteral stents may be used in addition to lithotripsy to aid in the passage of stone fragments. Typically, stents are inserted after lithotripsy if:
- The stone fragments are too large to pass through the ureter on their own.
- The ureter is narrow or has a stricture that could obstruct the passage of stone fragments.
- The patient has a history of ureteral injury or obstruction.
- The patient is experiencing severe pain or discomfort from the stone fragments.
