Neuron Locations: Beyond the Brain & Spinal Cord | Body Systems

In addition to the brain and spinal cord, neurons can be found in various locations throughout the human body. Sensory neurons are present in the skin, allowing us to sense touch, temperature, pain, and other stimuli. Neurons are also found in the autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary functions such as heart rate, digestion, and respiration. These neurons are present in the sympathetic nervous system (part of the fight or flight response) and the parasympathetic nervous system (responsible for rest and digest functions). Furthermore, neurons are found in the enteric nervous system, sometimes called the "second brain," which controls the digestive system and gut movements.
