Autonomic Nervous System: Sympathetic & Parasympathetic Systems Explained
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) consists of two divisions :
1. Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS):
- Mobilizes the body for action, preparing it for "fight or flight" responses.
- Increases heart rate, dilates pupils, inhibits digestion, and stimulates the release of adrenaline (epinephrine).
2. Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS):
- Maintains homeostasis and the body's "rest and digest" functions.
- Reduces heart rate, constricts pupils, stimulates digestion, and promotes overall relaxation.
These divisions work in balance to regulate various bodily functions and achieve overall physiological equilibrium.
